Becoming a Councillor

The Borough of Poole has 42 councillors. Currently there are 20 Conservatives, 18 Lib Dems and for 4 Poole People. Poole People was only established in October 2010 since when there has only been one set of elections so we have done remarkably well to gain a foothold. We are looking for candidates to stand across the borough in the May 2015 elections.

The role of councillor attracts people from many different backgrounds and for different reasons. It is a substantial commitment amounting to 15 to 20 hours per week on average in terms of council meetings, briefings, liaisons with council officers and helping constituents. Although it can be frustrating at times, it offers the opportunity to influence the future of Poole, help out residents and businesses and support local communities, and it is a great learning opportunity. All councillors receive an allowance (essentially a salary) which currently stands at about £9,500.
